How I ended up writing about casino payments

I'm Holly Wood, a New Zealand-based iGaming writer and editor, and I came to this work from the least glamorous end of it: the cashier. Early in my career I kept running into the same pattern — players would happily read three pages about a slot's bonus round, then get caught out by a withdrawal timeline or a wagering clause nobody had explained to them. So I made the money side my beat. Everything I write for Mr Fortune is aimed at players who deposit and cash out in New Zealand dollars, which means I care about what a method actually costs in time and paperwork, not just whether the logo appears on a payments page.

What I cover in depth

My work sits in five areas, and they're the ones I check personally rather than take on trust:

  • Payment methods and withdrawal timelines — cards, e-wallets such as Skrill, Neteller, MuchBetter and Payz, plus Trustly, Neosurf, Paysafecard and bank transfer, and how long each one really takes to pay out.
  • Bonus terms and wagering requirements — the 40x playthrough on deposit plus bonus, the separate 25x on free spin winnings, and the minimum deposit needed to qualify.
  • Licensing and player protection — what a Malta Gaming Authority licence obliges an operator to do.
  • Responsible gambling tools — deposit, wager, loss and session limits, reality checks, time-out and self-exclusion.
  • Slots and live dealer games — reviews of the studios behind the lobby, from Pragmatic Play and Play'n GO to Evolution Gaming's live tables.

The guides I keep updated

Most of what I publish falls into three buckets. There are banking walkthroughs that take a single method from first deposit to cleared withdrawal, including the standard identity checks and the difference between an e-wallet payout of one to three business days and a card or bank transfer that can run to five. There are breakdowns of the staged welcome offer — the first-deposit match with 50 bonus spins, then the second and third top-ups that build toward 180 spins in total — with the wagering spelled out rather than buried. And there are plain-English explainers on the licence and the operator behind the site.

How I test and verify before publishing

I read terms line by line, time real deposits and withdrawals instead of quoting marketing copy, and check licence and operator details against the regulator's own register before a page goes live. When conditions change, the page changes with them, and I date the update. One thing I won't soften: this is adults-only entertainment, 18+, and the limits, reality checks and self-exclusion tools exist precisely so you can set your boundaries before you need them.
